Choose the generalization and maintenance collection mode
Decide whether aides record generalization and maintenance checks as a single pass or fail, or as full runs that ABACare scores, and what changes when you switch.
Once a learner masters a target, their BCBA moves it to generalization, where the skill is tested in new settings, with new people or new materials, and later to maintenance, where the team checks from time to time that the skill stays. Your clinic chooses how aides record those checks, for every learner:
- Simple: one pass or fail per check, with no trials or timers.
- Granular: a full run with the target's own collector, such as trials or a timer, which ABACare scores against the target's criteria. BCBAs get more settings for these targets, such as regression criteria and the order in which contexts are tested.
New clinics start on Simple.
Before you start
- Only org owners see this setting, and only in the web app.
- Before you switch to Granular, make sure every aide has updated the mobile app. Older versions cannot record generalization or maintenance data in a Granular session. See Update the mobile app.
- Tell your BCBAs before you switch: the generalization and maintenance settings of their targets change with the mode.
Switch the mode
- Open Settings > Organization.
- In the Clinical Practice card, Generalization & Maintenance Collection shows the current mode. It stays greyed out until the page has loaded your clinic's settings.
- Select the other mode. A window opens, Switch to Granular collection? or Switch to Simple collection?, which explains what the switch does.
- Select Switch mode to confirm. Cancel, or closing the window, keeps the current mode.
The message Collection mode updated appears. If saving fails, Failed to update collection mode appears and the setting goes back to the saved mode. If the page opens with Failed to load organization, the setting stays greyed out: reload the page.
What happens next
- The new mode applies to sessions started after the switch, whoever starts them. A session already in progress keeps the mode it started with. Data recorded before the switch is never changed.
- Aides need to do nothing else: each session shows them the right way to record. See Record a generalization or maintenance pass or fail, Collect a granular generalization run and Collect a granular maintenance probe. Generic targets always use the pass or fail, whatever the mode.
- The generalization and maintenance settings on each target's page follow the new mode: see Configure generalization for a target and Configure maintenance for a target. Plan and target pages already open in the web app, yours included, show the previous mode until they are reloaded.
- Overriding a context or maintenance result exists only in Granular mode: see Override mastery for a context or maintenance.
- Printed data collection worksheets follow the current mode.
- Nobody is notified of the switch, and no history of it is kept. Another org owner who has the settings page open sees the new mode after reloading it.
